I purchased this fig about 15 months ago as a ficus retusa. Not sure if this is correct. Could it be a microcarpa?

Hi Dien

Yup looks like a Chinese Growling Tiger to me retusa.

Nicely shaped just needs a tidy up with lots of fine wiring to flatten out the pads and it looks like you are trying to get a nice crown happening that it needs as well.

Just noticed that it looks as though you are keeping the lower branch on the left ??

Dont tell me you only paid $10 for it ?? :( :( :( :( :(

Thanks JC,

The left lower braches sprouted last growing season. Thought I'll let them grow to fatten the trunk a bit more. They will be removed sometime in the future.

It was my first bonsai purchase. Bought in May last year for $380.

This is what it looked like 15 months ago:

I've defoliated it once last year, removed a rock and reposition a root, pulled down the branches a bit, and shortened the top, and just repotted it last week into a pot with about 10cm extra length. Hopefully it will grow with me for many years to come.
