Azalea - Humble beginnings

1 year 9 months ago - 1 year 9 months ago #55484 by Anthony W
Hi Guys

After a few seasons in the ground I was keen to start digging up, starting with a few skinny sticks initially I would leave in the container but slicing the bottom half of the container off giving roots room to move, but keeping the root ball tight, you can up size the ground container after the first years and increasing as you go.

I upgraded once, but itchy fingers have got me digging as Leong would say, these could of stayed a another year or two in the ground but hey know spring rooster here ( better get in before JC or is that a cockerel  )

These digs will be tightened hopefully with new growth let alone survive.

With this growing style you can grow tighter( more stock closer together ).......cheers

Next cab off the rank.

Called Evonne Goolagong named after one of Australia's tennis greats.

By constantly cutting, I got some movement in the trunk.

Looking very nice Anthony ,smart growing style. Also a timely post as I dug up a fairly nice one a few months ago. The commander and chief was complaining about the lack of a nice flowering bonsai. I know very little about them so will follow what the professionals do. I take it there will be a fair bit of back budding in the next couple of weeks? Cheers John.

Hi Anthony

Great stuff.

That second one I think that you should call it an ATLAS Azalea , I can hear it now what is he talking about is he sniffing pine sap  :silly:

The blue lines look like land fall and the lower left pad looks a lot like Australia on its side :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

Yes our wives think too much alike John :)

Yes hopefully some back-budding, I have removed the seed heads/spent flowers and then pruning back to a few leaves where I could.( slow and steady here ) The good thing is that they back bud on the hardwood, but as we know unpredictable, but will keep trying to just after Christmas so not to interfere with the flower process which I think starts just late January and or just after.

I have flooded pots for now as azaleas are surface root growers and with time we slowly lift them with each repot to show off a bit more bottom trunk as the root-age fuses to give more fat there...this process was shown to me from a fantastic azalea grower mate down my way, very sad that here passed away, forever miss him and very grateful for his sharing of azalea knowledge... hope that helps for everyone and thanks for input John

cheers Anthony

Hi Guys

Well our little azalea is a bit further along, and i believe starting to look like it belongs in pot, I would enjoy the flowers briefly and remove most and flowering buds before opening to put the energy into the new growth and design.

A good branch is promoting well and much needed where the red arrow is pointing and the pot one size too many for now, but all available at the time, won t hurt with extra moisture needed in summer.

See what think ...cheers

Hi Anthony

Looking good, once it fills in that side the pot might be ok for size?
