Propagation Tony Tickle style.

3 years 7 months ago #54413 by Rod Hockings
At the annual bonsai celebration at the Canberra arboretum, the guest artist, Tony Tickle, did a presentation of how he gets his collected deciduous to grow (mainly Hawthorns), when they don't have any roots. That was not too relevant to Australia in terms of Yamadori, but what got my interest was that he said the method was used to propagate from olive branches in Spain.this is his method:-
1. Cut off a suitable branch, top and bottom.
2. Place in pot with potting mix
3. Top soil with 3cm of sphagnum moss
4. Place in a black garbage bag - thin is good.
5 water thoroughly and tie bag of at top to seal it.
6. Place in full sun and water regularly to keep moist.

There was some scepticism about full sun in Australian conditions, but he said the hotter the better and they do it in Spain in summer. After 3 weeks there should be plenty of shoots- see pictures, the true test will be root growth. Stay tuned!

Yes, sorry to report they don't look well. They sprouted ok, but when I removed the garbage bag the new growth burnt off. I'm still leaving them in hope, but I suspect the roots didn't sprout. (They were a substantial size - about 10 cm diameter).
A bigger one that had a few roots has powered though.
