Juniper apex challenge

7 months 23 hours ago - 7 months 23 hours ago #62014 by Matt
I hope this will come out clearly in the photos. This Juniper has quite a nice straight trunk with maybe 2 options for a front. My challenge is the trunk was cut ~5 years ago and no clear leader formed, so the top branches out with 4-5 quite thick branches.

I’m not confident I could bend any of them back to line up with the trunk but that’s 1 option.

Option 1: Attempt the bend to straighten one of the top branches. Possibly two candidates and might be possible with some serious guy wires/cables. Likely the on that branches out to the left, then heads upwards.

Option 2: Thin the top, get some sun into the middle, and get new growth in close to the old cut to for the new leader.

Option 3: Reduce all the branches around the top by 75%, make a much tighter apex which would fill out.

Option 4: Remove the thinner beach that heads to the right, and ‘jin’ (‘shari’?) the very top as though the tree broke at some point.

Or something else?

Hi Matt,
You have a challenging piece of material there. I feel you should thin out those branches at the top. To many coming from one point will cause issues down the track. Make sure you look for tapering and interesting movement in the branch you select for a new apex.
Hope that helps
Cheers

Not sure if this adds any value or not, but here is my current thinking. I never did this kind of photo editing before but wanted to give it a go to show what I’m thinking.

Slowly, slowly.

First one is mine, second one is inspiration.

Progress update. Managed to straighten the top a little, and re-potted it now in time for spring. Time to let it grow.
